The Northern Echo are making claims that Pompey are to seriously test the ‘resolve’ of Boro for Yakubu with a player plus cash offering. A combined package of £12million; £10million cash plus Gary O’Neil – making his value a mere £2million, okay then! – said to be in the offering.

Whilst I could believe that Pompey would offer cash plus a player for Yakubu – and O’Neil is a long term target of Boro’s – suggestions that O’Neil is only valued at £2million are crazy, double that and it is still not enough for the former England U21 captain.

The same paper made claims that Pompey had already turned down a £6million offer for O’Neil this summer with Boro being prepared to pay £4million, hmm interesting how these sums work!

My own thinking would be the player actually being offered in any such deal – if this is not another media fabrication – would be Sean Davis, valued at far closer to £2million than O’Neil, he is also a player Boro have courted this summer.

In summary a return to Pompey for Yakubu is something that I would not write off at all, nor would I a cash plus player or even players deal, but I would be amazed if O’Neil would be one such player allowed to leave – he should never be allowed to leave.

Why would Harry Redknapp let a bright young English talent – who is after all our stand in captain – leave?
