Harry Redknapp has backed Sol Campbell to get back to his best.

Campbell has been fantastic for us since we signed him, and his form last season rightfully earned him an eventual – over due – England recall along with David James, however this season – since around Christmas time for sure – his form has been ‘erratic’ to say the least.

What has brought on this dramatic dip in form? And my own thinking in saying ‘dramatic’ would not be an understatement, as I feel this was not really a sudden dip in form it just seemed to go right away, as if some switch was flicked to make it happen! Well I do have my theories?

‘Class is permanent, form is temporary’ as they say, so he has not lost this class but his form does need to get back to somewhere near its best soon – clearly if it was as its ‘very best’ he would not be here now! – or we will pay the price, as we have on several occasions, but the blame cannot, and is not being laid at Campbell’s door entirely as that would not be fair, or right.

My own thinking is that time is catching up on him, but he still has the ability to perform much better than he has – but in all fairness the same goes for many others. I would like him to be here again next season, but if the form does not improve then as harsh as it might sound I do not think myself that he will, or dare I even say should be, well not as a regular anyway?

I reckon that the biggest drawback for him this season has been the fact that he has not been able to be ‘rested’ anywhere near as much as he has been needed to, and this probably has not helped – the loss of not having Linvoy Primus available this season has been felt much more than some might think.
