‘Younes Kaboul was the player of the month for September’, not my vote, yours – although these findings from the forum poll to determine who was our stand out man for September are probably thought thoughts that I do just about agree with to be honest…
First of all I must say there was not a lot of interest in this, and interest that was shown was fairly spread around, although Kaboul did have more votes.
Like I say though I just about agree that Kaboul (42.86%) deserved this as once again he had driven us on from the back, and also once again – as he had in August – he showed leadership qualities. You can look at him and think ‘could he have done better’ for the Everton goal? But it is done, you cannot undo it, although you could see how distraught he was at the goal and when we ultimately lost again.
I remain unconvinced – having admittedly been convinced by this during pre-season – that Aaron Mokoena is the right man to captain the side, but seen as the armband went onto Michael Brown and then David James last weekend it seems that Kaboul is not high on the list of priorities to be captain? Even though I would be tempted to give it to him as he is a near dead cert to play week-in-week-out, fitness permitting…
I think that mentions for September also need to go to:
Michael Brown (14.29%) again only grew in stature as the month went on for me. His work rate, effort and commitment cannot be faulted at all – and to be fair he is looking a better footballer than I thought he would! The guy has much more ability on the ball than he might be credited with and some of the skill I have seen he pull off, something on the half way line at Villa Park springs to mind, has been fantastic.
Clearly he is the vice captain, lets pass this on from Mokoena to someone else, and if this ends up being Brown I think we could do much worse, so lets do it. He would be in the side ahead of Mokoena for me, who would miss out in favour of Hassan Yebda.
Kevin-Prince Boateng (14.29%) is another that arrived with a few eyebrows raised at the ‘apparent’ £4m fee we have agreed on a ‘never-never’ with Spurs but to be fair the guy, along with Jamie O’Hara (14.29%) as well, has added a whole new dimension to our midfield and is looking a class act – The Prince could yet become The King at Fratton! It is just a pain in the arse that we will be losing him in the New Year to the African nations…
