Winterburn believes Adams will use his experience to make Pompey’s defence solid.

He said: ‘I think Tony will be fine at Pompey. He’s had his time at Wycombe and has also been abroad coaching.

‘The fact he was a top-class player will also help him do a good job.

‘One of his biggest assets will be helping Pompey on the defensive side of things.

‘I know he sometimes found it difficult getting his point across to players at Wycombe.

‘But it is totally different working with defenders higher up the leagues.

‘You are working with top players who don’t need telling three or four times.

‘I can see him working well on the coaching side of things and forming a good partnership with Harry.’

‘I think Tony has changed as a coach.

‘He’s not the type of person he was as a player earlier in his career. He is a deeper-thinking type of person now.

‘That will be a benefit to Portsmouth’s players, especially the younger ones.

‘He knows what it takes to have a career at the top level and what it takes to stay there.’
