Glen Johnson!

‘Glen Johnson was the best right back that we had during our premier league years’, not my vote, yours – although these findings from the forum poll to determine who was our stand out right back during the 7-year stay on the premier league are thoughts I would agree with…

The premier league years have brought us many ups and downs and many good and bad players; we focus on the good here though!

Well, I seem to have gone against my thoughts for the left back area with the man I voted for as our best right back here – for the left back I voted The Herminator over Matty Taylor, who I loved to bits, due to the fact that I felt The Herminator had been a better defender, and defenders ‘defend first and attack second.’

It is fair to say that Johnson has exception ability coming forward but his defensive play had been a little ropey at times…

For me though that side of the game, which of course ‘should’ have been his strongest, really came on and I think it would be fair to say that a lot of this can be attributed to Tony Adams and the work he did with him – added to the fact that he was able to play alongside players such as Linvoy Primus, Sol Campbell, Sylvain Distin and Younes Kaboul, who would have all helped him develop.

So, whilst defenders should defend first and attack second, Johnson is my exception to the role – that said, as mentioned, I think his defensive ability really improved during his years with us so he was quite easily the best right back we had as the votes showed!

A mention must go to Younes, who was a fantastic servant for us, on and off the field, during his short time with us. He ‘probably’ will go down in folk law as one of our favourites, if only he could have stayed a little longer and I think he really would have made the ‘true legend’ status, but hey ho…
