This is what Owenspompey considers Pompey’s best 11.

Here is my Best Ever Pompey XI, and this was a difficult decision to have to make.

1.David James – Simply the best.
2. Linvoy Primus – Mr Loyalty and he would always be in my team.
3. Mick Tait – Play anywhere, always did a great job, loved him.
4. Martin Kuhl – The ‘Iceman’ put his foot in and always gave 100%.
5. Sol Campbell – Great Defender, one of the best I have seen.
6. Sylvain Distin – Complements Sol, class act.
7. Robert Prosinecki – Did he really play for us? A genius and a true legend.
8. Darren Anderton – Good player, scored goals and could go past players for fun.
9. Guy Whittingham – Feed the Guy and he will score, I just wish he had stayed.
10. Teddy Sheringham – Classy, skilful and a pleasure to watch him display his talent.
11. Vince Hilaire – Loved watching his skilful play, and loved the way he went past defenders.

12. Alan Knight – Legend, say no more.
13. Paul Merson – Really good player and leader.
14. Paul Walsh – Class act and a very good player.
15. Mark Hateley – Could he score goals or what?
16. Mickey Quinn – ‘Noah’ proved he could score at every club he played for.

  • Nice one (Chris) owens. I think the bench is a little defensive and I sense you were desperate to get Yosser in your team. He did play 28 games at left back while Paul Hardyman was injured in 84/85 but it was not his best position by far!! Martin Kuhl another good choice and 100% man. Don’t forget Sunday Toast is about to start an alternative XI series so send them to Rug or me.

  • yep some really good names there, i think i might be putting vince hilaire in my team – which i must do soon, anyone else that wants to do one get them off to me too and i will add them…

  • i will sort an alternative 11 shortly dave, no explainations just names i think tho – keep it simple…

  • Good choices mate. All the players mentioned are part of my Pompey history, loved them all.

  • storagematt- thanks for the comments on Vital U’s about Teddy Sheringham and thanks for bothing to visit our site while we battle relegation in the Championship!

  • Nice one Owens – Where are you by the way not spoken for a while !
I can’t argue about any of them .. especially Vince … one of the best wingers i’ve ever seen in a Pompey shirt… along with Cally of course.. oh and Micky Mellows.. and Nicky Jennings…. and Alan Rogers.. but I’d still pick Vince ……. as reserve to Peter Marinello of course

  • Like it a lot OwensPompey. Just one change for me – (De Zeeuww to give the back end some more grit – and aggravate Djouff !).

  • Just checked members league and Owens has been on this month, obviously not happy about Pompey’s demise in his native city!!

  • I am not happy at all Dave, i cant believe that the team is perfoming so badly.
The players seem to be in place and the squad appears to have real depth to it, but we are just playing so poorly.
Diop wide on the right!! Sol sulking during the Everton game, and why get Auby and not give him a game.
Kanu has been shocking, we have a player who can do oi for 45 minutes at best, i admit he is skilful, but a team defends from the front, and he is too slow and idle to do that for us and teams get so much time to pick a pass from the back.
I fear for what United will do to us if they want to on Saturday, we just seem to play with no passion and no great desire to win.
I trust Harry and we need him to stay for a long time yet, but i cant believe at times we are so bad.
