This is what knocker considers Pompey’s best 11.

Hi I’m knocker and recently signed up to vitalfootball and would like to send my best 11.

Although I think a lot of the current squad will become some of the best players I have made my selection from when I started going to Fratton Park in the late 1980’s. So here are my choices and why:

GK – Alan Knight – Although Jamo is a better keeper 803 appearances and 22 years say it all LEGEND.

LB – John Beresford – Great attacking fullback with an eye for goal.

RB – Gianluca Festa – Only 1 season but thought he played a great part in our promotion team and I could not remember many other good right backs.

CB – Kit Symons – Cool as a cucumber and a good footballing brain.

CB – Linvoy Primus – Rock solid and 100% every game without fail (hope to see him in a pompey shirt again.)

LM – Preki – Top player in a not very good Pompey team.

RM – Darren Anderton – Great crosser of the ball and pivotal part in our great cup run 1992.

CM – Martin Kuhl – My first favourite player hard as nails and banged in a few goals too!

CM – Robert Prosinecki – Best player to pull on a Pompey shirt absolute genius even on 40 a day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ATT – Guy Whittingham – Superb goalscoring record for Pompey and formed deadly partnership with Walshie.

ATT – Micky Quinn – Deadly in the six yard box probably because he could not get back.

I think this would be a good attacking team and I think Whittingham and Quinn would score a hatful.

Thanks, knocker.

No right or wrong…
Remember there is no ‘right or wrong’ it is the opinion of the individual who is selecting, people might not agree but it is their call, so lets respect this.

This feature is another that has not been run for a while, and again I apologise for this, but I hope that others will be keen to do their ‘best 11’… click below for more info!

  • a good read knocker, sorry for the delay in adding it – features like this and others will be brought back again.
a very attack minded side – i like it!

  • Hello knocker, nice to meet you! Nice to see your best XI. Festa really was a brilliant player and shame he did leave after 1 season. I agree with your Prosinecki selection – what a player and imagine how awesome he would’ve been if his best mates weren’t Lambert & Butler!!

  • but what a player he was despite his best mates being lambert & butler Gino! for me still the ‘best’ footballer ive ever seen in a pompey shirt…

  • Agreed Rug. He really was something special – we always used to try and get Steptoe & Son theme tune going but we never could lol. I think he may have something to do with my Croatia obsession….I saw him at Zagreb airport when I was there last October with the rest of the squad – what a legend.

  • Rug – you are the master of the understatement!! Selected Feb 2008 published March 2009 and ‘sorry for the delay’ :D.

Good selection though from an era when we lacked any real quality at times. Don’t forget Toast will always publish ‘Your Worst XI’

  • good to see festa in there mate! canny at boro as well, all the best for this season obviously i hope you lose but i really want us both to stay up!!! best of luck for the rest of the season! wondering if any of you would be interested in answering a few questions for me about our up and coming fixture for our site, if you are will you please drop me an e-mail,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, cheers lads and all the best once again!!!

  • Finest.. I’ve popped you an email and I’ll arrange for one of us to answers the questions for ya … Anybody want to do it PM and the job is yours.. I’ll also be sending our questions to boro too..

  • Back to Knockers XI.. can’t believe there’s no ADA in the team but Quinny and the Corporal up top would bag a few .. Preki .. I loved him .. He’s a legend in the states..

  • Chix if you’re looking for volunteers, I wouldn’t mind!! I’m happy because I’ve broken into the Top Ten Vital Pompey users! Woohoo beers on me lads!!

  • i have no problem with you doing this Gino, i will leave this to you, chixy and finest to arrange…

  • I am really glad you included Martin Kuhl in your eleven. He used to stay with us and was a really lovely lad who took his football very very seriously indeed. It wasn’t much fun for him as he spent a lot of his time living in a Hotel. I can remember he used to get really pent up before a match and used to sit on his own phsycing himself up for the game.
