After a goal less 90 minutes, where Liverpool looked the most likely to win, although arguably Gary O’Neil had the best chance of all, the lottery of a penalty shoot out was needed to decide the Barclays Asia Trophy final.

John Utaka put the first spot kick wide, with Steven Gerrard, Matty Taylor, Dirk Kuyt and Lomana LuaLua then all successful with superb penalties.

Next up was Fernando Torres but he had his kick saved by David James. Pompey had the chance to go ahead through Hermann Hreidarsson and he scored – just, to make it 3-2.

James saved again, this time from Yossi Benayoun to give Niko Kranjcar – who literally came on for the closing seconds – then chance to win it and he made no mistake to win our first silverware, no matter how minor it is since we won the Division One title.

We rode out luck a little during the match itself, but defended very well with David James – despite a couple of horrible howlers – the hero in the match itself and then the shoot out, taking nothing away from the takers themselves, who took some great kicks.

A full match report will be added soon.

PLAY UP POMPEY!
