Pompey welcome title chasers Liverpool to Fratton tomorrow night, both teams need some sort of result for different reasons, Liverpool to stay on Man U’s tails, and Pompey to keep our heads above the grey relegation waters.
The transfer window has shut at last, but all the talk about Adams’ future will rumble on, until we win at least! Pompey have publicly come out to defend their manager after tabloid speculation that Curbishley had been approached to succeed him.
Benitez is getting quirkier by the minute himself, both managers seem a bit nuts, so should enjoy each others company in the boardroom later.
The window saw us grab a couple of Greeks to fire us up the table, last time we tried this was during a spectacularly unspectacular period in the club, Zajec signing anyone with a Greek passport or kebab in their hand, but Basinas has real pedigree, even if he is clocking on a bit, Gekas has an impressive scoring record at the highest level, so a few from him between now and May won’t go amiss.
Pompey Team News:
Sol Campbell looks likely to return to the line-up, not a moment to soon either with Kaboul picking up another ankle injury, the good thing is that Sol seems to rise to the occasion against the bigger clubs, he will need to be on top form tomorrow.
Nugent has been promised a start by Adams, Pompey fans have certainly warmed to the scouser, his tireless running and eagerness has gone down well with the Fratton faithful and he has been rewarded witha couple of overdue goals at last.
Pennant is a definite no-no, league rules have denied him the chance to fart in Benitezs’ face, and his workrate will be missed. Utaka may well get a start, Adams likes something about him and his last couple of cameos have certainly been an approvement.
Belhadj is available again after his red mist moment against Villa, I don’t know if Adams will chance him at left-back though, he may well replace the strangely ineffective Traore on the wing though.
Basinas I feel will step straight into the side, I can’t see his experience be signed to sit on the bench, Adams has declared he is the replacement for Mendes, so a couple of 30 yarders please mate!
Gekas should make the bench at least, his lack of games probably denying him a starting spot.
Player to watch: Nugent
Our Scouser will be out to get one over his compatriots, especially as an Evertonian. He also feels he deserves his spot in the line up at last and will be out to keep it.
Liverpool Team News:
Gerrard is the biggest absentee for Liverpool, his hamstring has sidelined him for a month or so, but strangely he has a stinker at Fratton normally, so is this a bad thing?
Torres is another who may miss out, hamstring trouble has sidelined him already this season, and he maybe rested tomorrow, although Benitez may chance him as he will be loathe to be without both his talismans.
Alonso is supposedly carrying a knock as well, how serious is unclear.
Lucas obviouly dips out and should be replaced by Mascherenho.
Player to watch: Riera
I like the look of this bloke, he plays like a proper winger and could well test Johnson if on form.
