Pompey talk with Pompeyscum

We can now see what Pompeyscum had to say when asked a few questions about Pompey, the season just gone and the one ahead along with the ‘possible’ future ahead.

Vital Pompey has previously brought you the ‘knowing me knowing you series’ – which is still running, so others will be added and if you want to do one just email – and we had the ‘talking Pompey with’ series last summer, this now returns under a new name and some fresh questions as ‘Pompey talk with’…

Pompeyscum was asked 6 questions about the 2008/09 season and what the hopes are for the 2009/10, one and indeed our future, is.

This is what they said…

  • So, sum up the 2008/09 season in 3 words?
    What – happened – there?

It looks like our debt bubble nearly burst all over us. I think Sacha has done an amazing job at the club and conducted himself impeccably. We were undoubtedly very lucky to have him in charge of the club and it is sad to see him go but what were we using to balance the books? Player values! Again, we were lucky to have a manager in Redknapp that could spot a good player (obviously, not all the time) and the value of our squad had increased more than the wages consistently over his tenures but I had always thought this just a bonus to a clubs coffers. Maybe this fiscal policy is a consequence of the Redknapp era but I don’t think there are many managers out there that can make it work. I’m not flash with my money and as such this policy is not something I could ever understand. I may be out of touch, I may be a loser, I may be thick but I felt a bit at times as if we had built PFC around the design of the Mary Rose. A bloody beautiful machine that started sinking before it even left the Solent.

  • Suddenly things seem ‘a lot brighter’ for Pompey with Dr SAF taking over – what are your hopes/aspirations under the new ownership? Assuming everything goes through!
I’d like to keep Crouch. He’s a legend in the making. Glen was always going to go but I don’t think 2m Peter has quite the same star attraction about him and the big boys will look elsewhere. There’s a long way to go but I don’t see why we couldn’t fight off clubs like Villa with an injection of money into the squad. Off the pitch, it’s got to be decent training facilities.
I suppose the first thing that needs to be sorted is the new manager. Undoubtedly the single most important decision of the summer and I imagine Dr SAF has already lined someone up but I will embarrass myself here with a few of my favs. Steve Coppell – solid, respectable. Claudio Ranieri – nice bloke, just finished 2nd in Italy. Sven – would be weird but very welcome. Strachan – proven record. There seems to be a good crop of managers available at the moment and I would only worry if we didn’t pick one of them. We need someone with a lot of experience as there is a lot of work to do with a squad to rebuild and respect to be earned.

  • Which players – that we could realistically sign – would you like to see arrive this summer?
Top end of the scale would be Gudjonsson from Barcelona and Steven Warnock to replace Johnson. Midfield would be Mokoena from Black….. hang on..we’ve already bought him haven’t we. Thank God for that. This is a bit corny but I’m going to bang the drum for Gary O’Neil. I think Richard Dunne will be available as well from Man City.

  • If you had to select 1 player to ‘sell’ or ‘release’ this summer who would it be and why?
I don’t think we can afford to lose anyone at the moment but one of the Richard Hughes/Hayden Mullins axis could go. I know Hughes has been good for Portsmouth but Mullins has had a tough half season. I’m far too polite/wet for management I guess.

  • What are you hoping for from Pompey in the 2009/10 season?
17th or above with some decent football thrown in for good measure. Another season in the Prem will make me happy but the players would want more. Look at West Brom and how happy everyone was with Tony Mowbray after he took them down (it’s going to sting a lot more now he’s left of course). That, coupled with the reaction to Hart’s successful yet unsuccessful tenure shows how important it is to string some passes together.

  • How many Pompey games do you expect to make during that season?
I’ll go to a few smaller games. I work on Premier League football (not for the League directly) but I’ve got to be as available as possible. I’m not contracted but if I turn work down there is a queue of perfectly wonderful people waiting to take my place.

Thanks for letting me get this off my chest!
    Pompeyscum.

Thanks to Pompeyscum for answering these.

    PLAY UP POMPEY!
