Pompey talk with pompeycarpet

We can now see what pompeycarpet had to say when asked a few questions about Pompey, the season just gone and the one ahead along with the ‘possible’ future ahead.

Vital Pompey has previously brought you the ‘knowing me knowing you series’ – which is still running, so others will be added and if you want to do one just email – and we had the ‘talking Pompey with’ series last summer, this now returns under a new name and some fresh questions as ‘Pompey talk with’…

pompeycarpet was asked 6 questions about the 2008/09 season and what the hopes are for the 2009/10, one and indeed our future, is.

This is what they said…

  • So, sum up the 2008/09 season in 3 words?
    What went wrong?

We started the season with such high hopes – a team that should have been challenging the likes of villa, Everton, and arsenal for the 4th champions league spot. We had England’s Number one, 4 solid defenders, 4 exceptional midfielders, and three gifted strikers.

  • Suddenly things seem ‘a lot brighter’ for Pompey with Dr SAF taking over – what are your hopes/aspirations under the new ownership? Assuming everything goes through!
I hope we get to see better football at Fratton Park than we did in the tail end of last season, and hopefully we can secure survival a little earlier. If we could continue where Sasha left of from this time last year (BEFORE we had to sell Muntari), and AFTER we had been promised three big players), I would be happy though. Although I doubt Real, Inter and Rangers would let us have Diarra, Muntari and Mendes back.

  • Which players – that we could realistically sign – would you like to see arrive this summer?
We need two new central midfielders – it would be great to see Manuel Fernandes come back, and Giovanni dos Santos also looks like an exciting proposition.

We also need another centre forward, and I think that either Jo or Saviola would be good signings, although possibly they are both aiming to high. And it might be worth trying to get Vela on loan from Arsenal.

It looks like we will be needing a right back too – so I would think maybe we could approach Man U, to try to get Rafael on loan (or as part of a swap for Johnson?), other whys we will likely be having to look at Cranie, Kaboul or someone from the championship. That would also mean we will probably need a new central defender – which could be Micah Richards, if Man City keep bringing in floods of expensive players.

  • If you had to select 1 player to ‘sell’ or ‘release’ this summer who would it be and why?
Haden Mullins. Ok, he’s solid – but I genuinely think that we would play better with only 10 players on the pitch, than with him in the team, he is so negative!

  • What are you hoping for from Pompey in the 2009/10 season?
I think the first thing to aim for is 40 points, and survival. Aiming beyond that is too much for now, as we struggled badly at the end of last season, and it looks like we will have sold our best players by the time this one starts. Unless the new owner splashes out on an expensive manager, and puts a lot of money into new players, we will struggle. And even if he does spend big, it’s no guarantee life will be any easier!

Having said that, we could go out and get a top 10 finish, a decent run in one of the cups, and possibly play some good football along the way. It depends how long it takes for the owner, and a new manager to come in, and which players leave!

  • How many Pompey games do you expect to make during that season?
No Idea! I hope to go to the first game of the season (wherever that is? I’ll probably know by the time this is out?), and I’ll take it from there.

Thanks to pompeycarpet for answering these.

    PLAY UP POMPEY!
