Veteran defender Arjan De Zeeuw is being linked with a sensational return to Pompey – okay maybe the sensational bit is a bit much, but it would be something – after his release by Wigan at the end of the season.

Former Pompey captain De Zeeuw – 37, is looking for a new club after Wigan decided not to give him a new deal and some speculation is linking him with a return to Pompey, what role – and how much of a role at that – he would play I am not quite sure though.

The Pompey decline under Alain Perrin well and truly started when he allowed De Zeeuw to leave the club – seeing Andy O’Brien as a better option to our captain and best defender at the time. De Zeeuw was one of a number of players that should never have been allowed to leave this club when they did – his, and other players quality were not replaced for a long time – almost to long.

Leicester are also being linked, so with the Mandaric connection and the chances of regular first team football more likely – something that a player of his age will be looking for – this would look the more likely move. Any return to Pompey would most likely involve a coaching role combined, which would then cast further doubts over members of the current coaching set up.

All in all a return to Pompey is not a very likely scenario to be played out but De Zeeuw will always be a Pompey hero in my eyes.
