As Pompey prepare for the League Cup meeting with Cardiff, less than an hour away, we look back to the League One opener against Rochdale and who was viewed as the man of the match.

Jack Whatmough’s performance, with the local lad given the nod ahead of Tom Davies, was seen as the best one from a Blues player against Rochdale at Fratton Park on Saturday.

Having been asked to vote, based on your experience of the game as a watching one at Fratton or listening on the radio, with 50% of the vote Whatmough got this ahead of anyone else to win the Vital Pompey MotM.

What the poll asked – Rochdale MotM

How you voted – Whatmough 50%
Pitman 33%
Talbot 8%
Burgess 4%
Chaplin 4%
McGee 1%
Holmes-Dennis 0%
Evans 0%
Baker 0%
Rose 0%
Bennett 0%
Sub – Lowe 0%
Sub – Naismith 0%

Yes, Brett Pitman was the two goal match winner, he also led the line well and intelligently, but I must say I thought Whatmough did well, especially in the second half when we saw some excellent positional play from the defender.

Personally I think, with Pompey still looking for a defensive midfielder, Whatmough could do a job in that area. The only thing that could let him down is his mobility as I’m not sure he could get up, down and around the field as much as needed? His footballing brain, ability to read and break up play would work though.

Anyway, time to move on fully from Saturday and the potential of a Pompey upset in the League Cup against Cardiff.

There’s still time, ahead of this trip to the Cardiff City Stadium, to share your views. As always we’re looking to know how you feel this will go? That requires you to vote on the latest poll (on the front pages or in the forum) in one of ways given.

What the poll is asking – League Cup – Cardiff v Pompey

Options to vote – Pompey win
Cardiff win

Remember, you’ll have until kick-off to do this, to make a prediction in the Pompey Predictions League for this game too – this fixture will form part of a ‘cup spin off’ Predictions League.
