I’m not going to sit here and claim that I’ve followed the progress of the Pompey ladies but I was aware they had a successful season…although this wasn’t ended by promotion.

As such this means not only will the men – with all due respect to the ladies team, which is of course my main priority, but also the ladies will have promotion as the top target for next season.

The ladies had won the Premier League Southern Division and played off against Northern Division winners Sheffield FC for a place in the Super League Two on Sunday but an injury-time winner from Lisa Giampalma took Sheffield FC up with the Pompey ladies left thinking about ‘what might have been’ in the end…

Ladies manager Perry Northeast told the BBC that it was a cruel way for our season to end but the side will come back better for it:

‘We will be bigger, better, stronger, faster. We’ll make sure that we get up next time.

‘For the whole season to come down to added time in the final is cruel.’

Much like the men’s side the ‘bigger clubs’ had managed to lure away the better players but a rebuild, again like the men’s side – although not as successfully mind! – has taken place with the side going a long way in ‘a short space of time’ with Northeast proud of the ‘absolutely magnificent’ squad in place:

‘I can’t not be proud. The girls have come such a long way in such a short space of time.

‘The Super League opening up a couple of years ago had a massive knock on us – we lost some very good players, and rightly so, because they should have been playing in the Super League.

‘We had to build a side up. The girls have been absolutely magnificent.’

All being well both the men and ladies teams can be celebrating promotion this time next year eh!

Does anyone follow the women’s side at all, if so would they be interested in many providing us on VP with some regular coverage of them one a week or every other week or so?

If so just let me know with an email or a comment below…
