Pompey kick-off with a bang

It might only be pre-season but a win is a win, and Pompey got off to a winning start ahead of the new season in impressive goalscoring fashion by thrashing neighbours Havant 5-0 at Westleigh Park.

Ryan Bird, a goalscorer with an impressive record in the lower leagues, did his chances of earning a contract with us no harm with a couple of goals – the opening one within a minute of kick-off, albeit slightly fortuitous!

A 2nd half own goal and others from fellow debutants – does a pre-season friendly count as a debut? – Romain Padovani and Andy Barcham wrapped up the win.

Keeping a cleansheet is always a good thing so both keepers Phil Smith and John Sullivan will be happy with that, as will the defenders that played in font of each keeper in each half.

Havant: Bevan (Searle 80); Newton (Strugnell 46), Woodford (c), Monteiro (McDonald 46), Blanchett; Makofo (Wedlake 71), Hutchinson (Adebowale 46), Ryan, Ramsey; Ciardini (Jones 46), Kabba (Owusu 46)

Pompey: Smith (Sullivan 46); Moutaouakil (East 46), N’Gala (Devera 46), Bradley (Webster 46), Triggs (Butler 46); Holmes (Cooper 46), Ertl (c) (Padovani 46), Wallace (Mendy 46), Harris (Barcham 46); Connolly (Craddock 46), Bird (Agyemang 46)
