Pompey did the exact opposite of what was expected of them today, they won!

All the talk in the tabloids is of meltdown Pompey, well the 11 who took the field this afternoon against a Rangers side (who were a bit below strength to be fair)certainly put up a fight.

The starman was our new loanee, winner of last years lead boot in France, Fredric Piquionne, 2 goals in any match is a good start, but to put a dampener on it, Bopp scored twice on his debut!

Pompey fielded a reasonably strong side considering recent departures, Kaboul was on the right side of defence, with Marc Wilson slotting in alongside Distin.

Rangers were the first to threaten, Belhadj was caught in possesion, but Boyd’s shot was blocked out and then Papac shot at James who saved easily.
Pompey were next up, Utaka going on a run and squaring to Mullins who came over all Quashie and aimed for the skies, literally.
Kranjcar was looking lively and had a couple of pokes fielded by McGregor.

On the half hour and Pompey broke the deadlock, Kaboul excelling in his right-back role once more, sent over a perfect cross for Piquionne to flick home with his head, a rare moment of happiness in a grim summer.
Wilson and Distin were looking like a fine pairing and thwarted whatever Rangers could muster.

6 minutes into the second half and Piquionne was at it again, he beat David Weir in the air then skinned McGregor and rolled into an empty net, Pompey were looking good. A hat-trick almost followed but our new hero made a hash of tucking in another cross and the chance went begging, this was to be his last contribution and he left the field to raptuous applause.
Pompey still pushed though, and Kaboul fired in another cross-shot which thundered into a post and away to safety.
Kranjcar cleared the bar with another effort, and that was about it as Pompey finally settled for pre-season cruise mode.

Any bit of joy is welcomed at Fratton from whatever source, but in true Pompey style this has been dampened by news breaking out that the proposed takeover may well have collapsed, more on this as it un-folds…..

  • err surely gaydamak wouldn’t let the deal collaspe because without this deal hes in even more **** than we would be, and it would seem he is the only thing holding it back. but anyway as far as the game goes really good to see a solid display today and what can i say about freddy absolute class! my hopes for next season are starting to to pick up how far they get will be prolly be determined what happens tomorrow i suppose…

  • Yeah let’s enjoy a moment of light relief and FOOTBALL. I’m really chuffed. Sounds like we might have a jem in our Fred..Freddy…Piq… Brilliant debut. And as for the other #### there’s sweet FA that we can do about that…PUP….PPU….

  • Football’s back!!! Much more promising looking Pompey side than of late, and I’m not sure that apart from Hermann and Finnan being injured, its not the starting 11 that Hart intends to start with. Freddy looks great! That second goal, he got himself in a one on one with the keeper, rounded him and finished decisively. Nugent would have missed or fallen over. Made me feel a lot better about the season ahead. (Well it did till I heard the “news” about the takeover).

  • I must also say that there is an early contender for the ‘away fans of the season’ award by the Rangers fans – and the fact that it was only a friendly makes it all the more admirable. Loads of them, supported their club excellently (as opposed to understandably subdued Pompey fans) and seemed to be enjoying the local hosteries in a peaceful and good-natured way.

  • City fan here, just wanted to congratulate you on the win- Piquionne should be a good signing for you and hopefully he will make up for the loss of Crouch. Its a shame the FA have been so slow at authorizing your takeover, hope its sorted soon and you can replace the players you have lost. Good luck.

  • Cheers eighthsin, but is looks as though the takeover has hit the rocks and is sinking fast. Great to see a game again, and the team perform so well, even if the Rangers side was a little understrength. Whatever will be, will be, but for tonight I’m happy to have seen a decent Pompey performance.

  • Thanks eighthsin, but we can’t blame the FA about our takeover, its our old owner and our new owner that can’t get their acts together – leaving us in limbo all pre-season.

  • I listened to the Quay and it sounded like we were solid. The are of great worry is our strength in depth. Sadly every bit of success at our club has to be tainted by something else. Poor old Pompey.

  • Kranjcar was excellent in midfield! Freddy scored two great goals. kaboul played well and Wilson was very solid. I liked what I heard (could not see it) and this fills me with a lot of hope. A good performance from the 11 that might be starting next week!

  • Kranjcar was impressive today Malta and coming from me that is high praise indeed .. come to think of it everyone of the starting XI put in a good shift and if we start against Fulham with that line up we will be able to put up a fight I reckon.. it’s gonna be tough this season but bravery and commitment will be just as important a than skill (if not more so)

  • If we could swop Nugent fro Greening, and then somehow get Hunt, Benjani and O’Neill we could begin to look at a strong squad.
Also Huth or Senderos or even Mancienne on loan from Chelsea would do me.
    Please please forget about Viduka!!

  • he looked very good on the highlights… confident second finish and even better first if he meant it…
