The draw for the 2nd round of the carling cup has been made and Pompey have a home tie against league one side Leeds – it is still strange saying that about them!

On the face of it this looks an ‘easy’ match, but Leeds will be very keen to upset their Premiership opponents to advance further in the cup to bring them some much needed cash – however provided we put out a ‘proper side’ then we really should beat them.

We famously beat them in the FA cup about a decade ago, but the last cup meeting between the two sides – well the last one I can think of – came in the league cup in the 2004/05 season when we beat them 2-1 at Fratton. We went on to the quarter final that season before crashing out to Watford 3-0 I recall.

Before that one the last cup tie I can remember against them came in the FA cup when they spanked us 5-1 at Fratton in the late 90’s. I think we took the lead through Luke Nightingale but it went down hill from there.

Since then we have spanked them at Fratton in the Premiership the season they went down.

Yep, it is a potential ‘banana skin’ but we should do enough to get through and keep alive our hopes of winning a domestic cup. My thinking is – as much as it may be viewed as a ‘Mikey mouse cup’ – I would happily see Pompey win it.
