Sunday was a surprisingly quiet day for Pompey and the tabloids, with most of the ‘links’ actually coming in the mighty News of the World!

This paper claimed that Sunderland are looking to sign Andy O’Brien – who has been told he can leave – although Wigan were later also linked with him. So long as we recoup a bit of what we paid out he will move on shortly, you would think?

The same paper made claims that Jermain Defoe has turned down a £12million offer to rejoin West Ham, also ruling out a possible move to Pompey, ‘Jermain’s just not interested.’ I wonder how interested he could be though if/when Spurs sign Darren Bent, hmmm?

Nothing really caught my eye though on a ‘quiet’ Sunday for speculation although if I had to pick I would admit I did have a little chuckle at the fact that The News of the World – yep, that paper again! – reported Yakubu was ‘on the brink of walking out on Middlesbrough,’ but reports were quickly denied in the Middlesbrough Gazette by Boro chief executive Keith Lamb.

‘Yakubu is contracted to this club for the foreseeable future and we have no plans to change that.

‘They are all looking forward to seeing the Yak back for pre-season training and he’s very much part of our future.’

So, Yakubu will be leaving Boro in the coming weeks then – as this usually happens after such denial – what price a Pompey return even though it has been written off?
