Hindsight always makes a situation look different but perhaps that was not the right way to go?

Some of the contracts handed out to players, in terms of their length, definitely were not right – then again if they had not have got that amount of time perhaps they would not have signed?

Maybe that would not have been a bad thing with some I guess!

This summer Andy Awford knows that the situation that he is faced with is different, yep we will have players out of contract but will also have plenty under contract with him left with ‘the nucleus’ of a squad to work with.

Awford has told the News that he is happy to play ‘the waiting game’ if it means getting the right players and making sure we have enough of them, not that he yet knows what sort of squad size he is after?

I would say that if we had anything between 12-18, maybe the higher end, of what you would call ‘1st team experienced’ players that would be a good base.

You then supplement the squad with the younger, less experienced players, that can come in and do a job from the academy and/or are learning the ropes as pros on newly signed professional deals.

What I know is I trust Awford’s judgement and trust that he, and the board, would have learned a lesson from last season with 1-year deals with the option of a 2nd the way forward, 2-year deals at best for those that we know can cut it, no more of the types of deals handed out last summer…

Definitely nothing to a player with a ‘dodgy’ injury record!

Top priority is sorting out who stays and who goes from those out of contract – and a released and retained (or hoped to retain) list will be announced later this week it seems.
