The Stilian Petrov deal has been described as an insider as “close.”

Pompey are ready to pay Celtic the 4.5 million they are looking for. Although Celtic have declared this as an acceptable price, they have also made it clear to Pompey that they would have to sign a replacement first. They may not have this option with Petrov pleading with his manager to let him go.

Redknapp said: ‘We decided to give it another go with Stilian because I’d really like to get him.”

‘It is entirely up to Celtic what happens with the bid and I wouldn’t tell them what they should do. I would very much like to get a deal done.’

Petrov is thought to have already spoken to Portsmouth about a possible move.

‘I have had many offers and I have spoken with a couple of managers,’ Petrov told a Bulgarian radio station.

‘I won’t say who they are but they have made me offers. The Portsmouth offer seems to be the most realistic.

‘I really need another challenge and I believe England is the place for me to go.

‘I know Celtic are unhappy but I have to leave. Everything is in their hands.’
