About a month ago, I would say, it was looking highly unlikely that Marcos Painter would be getting a new deal with Pompey when his short-term deal expired.

Fair play to him though, having overcome injury he has managed to come back into the team and has played the last 5 games for us, and from those 5 he has helped us keep 3 cleansheets.

This, and his performances in these games of course, have earned him this new contract.

It is interesting to see that he has only got another month mind – although I must say that, although it is technically ‘a risk’ on his part, it is definitely a sensible move on ours!

Should he go beyond the end of January, but we then decide that we will not extend this latest contract, that would mean that he will not be able to sign for another club until the end of the season?

I think that is right anyway, as I am sure we had this situation last season that meant even if players short-term deals expired, and they wanted to leave or we allowed them to leave, that if this fell after the transfer window had closed they could not move elsewhere…

Whatever, like I say this is a sensible move as should his injury problems return we do not end up paying him for month, like we did for a large spell last year, with no return.

Having added Nicky Shorey, and us of course having Dan Butler (remember him!), he has plenty of competition that should inspire him to keep producing the goods…
