Peter Storrie has confirmed on the Pompey Site that we have had a bid ‘equating to £4.5m’ for Gary O’Neil rejected by Boro.

He left Pompey on transfer deadline day in August 2007 but is said to be desperate to return to the club, but this now appears unlikely as Storrie has said that this offer will not be increased: ‘we made what we thought to be a good offer for Gary, but unfortunately it was declined and we will not be increasing our bid.

‘Gary is a player that Tony and the team know well having been here since he was a youngster. He would have been a good addition to the squad.’

I was convinced that he would return but with the club for the first time breaking ranks and speaking openly, albeit official, about a bid for him it appears like it will be the last – although in a day and age when player power often wins the day maybe we have not heard the last of this?

The chances of getting a player in by the weekend now seem to be going down, but 2 are ‘said’ to be lined up and will be in place by the end of next week…
