Another feature, again courtesy of our sister site PompeyRama, sees us look at those Pompey personalities – past or present – who have a birthday on this day.

7/1/1982: Paul Robinson
7/1/1985: Wayne Routledge
7/1/1991: Adam Barton

From the Ed

Happy birthday to Paul Robinson, Wayne Routledge and Adam Barton – the Pompey players from the Blues’ past born on this day.

Robinson, Routledge and Barton have all played for us in recent years – of course Robinson and most recently Barton – so I recall them all.

Robinson, the Pompey captain at the time, was a player many would have kept when he was allowed to leave. Routledge was probably least effective – of this trio – during his loan at Fratton Park. As for Barton, he had his moments but a move to Scotland gave him his opportunity for regular football he couldn’t secure on the South Coast.

Now onto the games previously played.

Played – 15
Won – 7
Drawn – 4
Lost – 4

I recall the string of FA Cup games in the 1990s – some better than others – as well as the cup win at Ipswich in 2006. However, it is another blank day for me as I’ve not managed to attend a game.

What are your memories of Robinson, Routledge and/or Barton from their Pompey days? Also have you taken in any of the games previously played today – if so what are the memories from them too?

  • All three birthday boys still playing at Wimbledon, Swansea and Partick Thistle respectively.

Games starting with Bury in 1967.

  • The Peterborough game in 1961 was a famous day for the visitors. The Posh had just gained a place in the League and this was their first big cup clash. They invaded Pompey in their thousands and covered the City in stickers such as ‘Up the Posh’ some that remained for years. They won the game too losing to Villa after a replay in the Fourth Round. Pompey got their revenge in 1968 when Ray Hiron scored the only goal at London Road.

  • 89&84…..Draw in 89 but got my win in 84 which took us on to meet Scum in the next round…saw all 3 b’days,Robinson probably should’ve stayed for another year…Barton average, in Scotland now & Routledge was sub on many occasions but never scored for us
