Another feature, again courtesy of our sister site PompeyRama, sees us look at those Pompey personalities – past or present – who have a birthday on this day.

5/12/1916: Guy Wharton
5/12/1959: Lee Chapman
5/12/1971: Ian Hendon

From the Ed

Happy birthday to Guy Wharton, Lee Chapman and Ian Hendon – the Pompey players from the Blues’ past born on this day.

Wharton isn’t a name I know anything about; he was also around well before my time.

I cannot recall Chapman too fondly from his brief time on the south coast, then again was he with Pompey for long enough for anyone to do this! He was a cracking striker but he had a dreadful spell at Fratton Park late in his career, four or five games and that included a sending off I am sure?

I know of Hendon, most recently from his brief spell as a manager with Leyton Orient. However, I cannot recall him from his Blues days to be honest.

Now onto the games previously played.

Played – 14
Won – 6
Drawn -3
Lost – 5

I have taken in a couple today – both of these were at Fratton, a win against Burnley in 2009 and another three points at the Park against Crewe way back in 1998.

What are your memories of Wharton – clearly too early for anyone, Chapman and/or Hendon from their Pompey days? Also have you taken in any of the games previously played today – if so what are the memories from them too?

  • 15,09,98,&87….Can’t remember much about 15 apart from McGurk scoring in the Fratton End,09 I’m sure was a lunchtime KO but it wasn’t on tv as I recall so bit of a strange one.Hermann scored in the Fratton End & celebrated in his usual fashion!! 98 was when I used to sit in the FE with my son &87 was back in the old 1st Div, a few months after Coventry had won the Fa Cup

  • Forgot to mention Chapman & Hendon….Chapman was a massive letdown, didn’t really want to be here & stayed only 1 month…..Hendon very similar but he was only on loan, from Spurs I think…
