Another feature, again courtesy of our sister site PompeyRama, sees us look at those Pompey personalities – past or present – who have a birthday on this day.

23/8/1922: Jimmy Stephen
23/8/1942: Bill Williams
23/8/1954: Graham Horn
23/8/1984: Glen Johnson
23/8/1992: Lennard Sowah

From the Ed

Happy birthday to Jimmy Stephen, Bill Williams, Graham Horn, Glen Johnson and Lennard Sowah – the Pompey players from the Blues’ past born on this day.

Horn, Williams and Stephen were all before my time and in all honesty aren’t players I’m familiar with.

But Johnson is one I’ll never forget as he was one of the best full backs in my era of watching football and one of the numerous – obviously at a cost – England internationals Pompey had.

Sowah. Well, what a waste of a talent – he wouldn’t show patience and left us shortly after making his breakthrough into the side at 16 or 17, now, I think, playing for Hearts after a spell in Germany and a trial with Millwall.

Now onto the games previously played.

Played – 17
Won – 5
Drawn – 5
Lost – 7

There isn’t too much in it but we’ve still lost more than anything else.

Despite the fact we’ve played no less than 17 games on this day in the past, recalling a good few of them, amazingly I’ve not managed to take in a single one.

What are your memories of Stephen – too early for anyone, Williams, Horn, Johnson and/or Sowah from their Pompey days? Also have you taken in any of the games previously played today – if so what are the memories from them too?

PLAY UP POMPEY
