A look back at this day in history, and what was happening with Pompey courtesy of our sister site PompeyRama.

No Pompey games have previously played on this day.

Due to this lack of games, well, none of them it will be straight onto the other feature – again courtesy of PompeyRama – looking at those Pompey personalities – past or present – who have a birthday on this day.

22/7/1916: Bert Barlow
22/7/1943: Ray Hiron

From the Ed

Happy birthday to Bert Barlow and Ray Hiron – the Pompey players from the Blues’ past born on this day.

Both Barlow – he would all – and Hiron were well before my time. I do know of Hiron by name, pretty well on that score, but that’s it.

What are your memories of Barlow and/or Hiron from their Pompey days?

  • I saw Hiron quite a bit, including when he played in my first ever game in 71…scored over 100 goals for the club & Barlow famously scored in or FA Cup win in 39 v Wolves
