A look back at this day in history, and what was happening with Pompey courtesy of our sister site PompeyRama.

No Pompey games have previously played on this day.

Due to this lack of games, well, none of them it will be straight onto the other feature – again courtesy of PompeyRama – looking at those Pompey personalities – past or present – who have a birthday on this day.

1/8/1976: Nwankwo Kanu

From the Ed

The season is almost here but we’ll still have the odd day in the early months of August when we have no games, such as today but happy birthday to David James, Jimmy Glass and Nwankwo Kanu – the Pompey players from the Blues’ past born on this day.

A few birthdays, including arguably the best ever goalkeeper we’ve had celebrating as is the goalscorer of one of the most memorable goals in recent times too… no I’m not talking Glass scoring a dramatic Carlisle goal to keep them in the Football League in 1999.

I wonder if James could still do a job even approaching his 50s. I think he could and believe he wanted to play for Pompey in the play-offs against Plymouth. Alan Knight’s a legend but Jamo is quite possibly, if not probably, the best keeper we’ve had at this club.

Glass is someone I know from his time with other clubs, but unlike Kanu and Jamo I didn’t get to see him play for Pompey at all during his brief loan with the Blues in the 1990s.

Kanu, yes, I know things turned sour in the end but the scorer of the FA Cup winner in 2008 will always be remembered. He turns now in his early 40s, however, I’m sure I wouldn’t be alone in actually question if that really is his age.

What are your memories of James, Glass and/or Kanu from their Pompey days?

PLAY UP POMPEY!
