Another feature, again courtesy of our sister site PompeyRama, sees us look at those Pompey personalities – past or present – who have a birthday on this day.

15/4/1969: Craig Foster
15/4/1981: Andres D’Alessandro
15/4/1986: Quincy Owusu-Abeyie
15/4/1991: Luca Scapuzzi
15/4/1992: Nathaniel Mendez-Laing
15/4/1995: Nick Awford

From the Ed

Happy birthday to Craig Foster, Andres D’Alessandro, Quincy Owusu-Abeyie, Luca Scapuzzi, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Nick Awford – the Pompey players from the Blues’ past born on this day.

Plenty of birthdays, I recall all of them to differing degrees of fondness and saw them all play for Pompey. Foster certainly had his moments and D’Alessandro will always have a special place in my heart for the part he played at a crucial time for the Blues, shame we didn’t have him long.

As for Owusu-Abeyie, anyone who scores against the lot down the road will also be fondly recalled. Unfortunately Awford couldn’t follow in his old man’s footsteps – Andy, of course – and make it with Pompey, but it wasn’t to be was it.

Loanees Scapuzzi and Mendez-Laing didn’t really cut it during their time at Fratton Park, no idea what happened to the former with the latter now making his mark in the Championship with Cardiff.

Now onto the games previously played.

Played – 22
Won – 6
Drawn – 4
Lost – 12

This is day to forget in many ways due to the fact over 50% of the games played have ended in defeat.

It’s been over a decade since the last game played, but I do recall it. However, I wasn’t at it and haven’t made a game at all previously today.

What are your memories of Foster, D’Alessandro, Owusu-Abeyie, Scapuzzi, Mendez-Laing and/or Awford from their Pompey days? Also have you taken in any of the games previously played today – if so what are the memories from them too?

  • Just 06&03…2 wins though. 06 was part of the great escape & 03 more famously was the win that confirmed our promotion to the Premier League.Toddy getting the winner in the Fratton End.saw all the B’days D’Alessandro being my favourite, great little player, very skilful, will always remember that goal on the Easter Monday at the Valley.Owusu-Abeyie, I was lucky enough to be at St Scummies to witness his famous goal.Foster as you said had his moments.Mendez-Laing & Scapuzzi were both on loan, didn’t to too much & didn’t stay too long( thinking about I think without checking Scapuzzi played at StScummies in the 2-2, another one I went to)& Awford of course not up to it & was dropped in the deep end at Plymouth by his Dad & didn’t play again I don’t think

  • Rekik, I remember him pretty well, and quite liked him. He went on to play for Holland didn’t he. Scapuzzi isn’t someone I can recall seeing play for us, now idea when he ended up?
