A look back at this day in history, and what was happening with Pompey courtesy of our sister site PompeyRama.

No Pompey games have previously played on this day.

Due to this lack of games, well, none of them it will be straight onto the other feature – again courtesy of PompeyRama – looking at those Pompey personalities – past or present – who have a birthday on this day.

14/7/1900: William Haines
14/7/1972: Andy Awford
14/7/1980: Sam Sodje

From the Ed

Happy birthday to William Haines, Andy Awford and Sam Sodje – the Pompey players from the Blues’ past born on this day.

Obviously Haines was around before my time so I didn’t see him play and cannot say I know of him to be honest – no one would have seen him play anywhere.

However, Awford is recalled fondly from his time as a loyal servant to Pompey as a player during his long career – which would have been longer but for injury – and then his stints as a coach and eventually manager of the Blues.

Admittedly his time as the boss wasn’t as memorable as that of his time at Fratton Park as a player but he had his moments, including the spell to keep Pompey in the Football League.

Sodje is a player who also did ok during his time at Fratton but wouldn’t be recalled too fondly after the betting scandal he was linked with.

What are your memories of Haines – too soon for anyone of course, Awford and/or Sodje from their Pompey days?
