David Nugent is a striker Harry Redknapp – and plenty of other managers I am sure – admires. But Redknapp has said in The News that the asking price is too much for Pompey to match.

‘I like David Nugent. He’s a good player.

‘But I see Sunderland and Birmingham are in for him and they’re talking about £7m or £8m.

‘That’s a lot of dough.’

I find myself thinking how much is too much though?

Redknapp keeps saying asking fees are ‘too high’ and we ‘cannot match what others will offer’ them in wages, but he also knows we will have to pay a pretty price to get someone that will score. We will need to pay between £5 and £10million if we want someone that will score 20 goals.

Nugent is not proven at the highest level but he has all the qualities one would think he needs to be a success.

Pompey might be right not to pay this and I would think paying money of a similar amount to this ‘reported’ amount could be seen as less of a gamble on Yakubu, or someone proven. The long term investment in Nugent would be worth it though – wouldn’t it?

I must confess that I have been impressed with Nugent – from what I have seen – but at the same from what I have seen at the U21’s lately this kind of money would be better off spent on his strike partner Leroy Lita.

The Pompey striker search goes on, but we will get there.

PLAY UP POMPEY!
