All Pompey eyes were on Ewood Park, Craven Cottage, Eastlands, St James’ Park, the Britannia and White Hart Lane tonight – but would any of these do us a favour in our fight to avoid the drop?

Of course doing it ourselves and not relying on others makes things a lot easier, and I do want it to be this, but if we have to accept a helping hand from others to stay up as I am not proud I will accept this!

Blackburn 0-0 Everton
A draw, well I would have accepted that before the game as it keeps them behind us, but only by 1pt behind and their goal difference is better than ours – that might become a factor in the end!

Fulham 0-1 Hull
Hull winning was not good as they have been in freefall – obviously one win does not change things entirely but this could install some new found confidence that puts them 4pts ahead of us, and a little more away from relegation, albeit with a slightly worse goal difference…

Man City 2-0 Villa
Many feel Citeh were safe anyway, or near enough safe and this win over Villa not only puts them even further down the road to this it also extendeds their lead over us to 7pts, and more from the bottom 3, and of course they have one of the better goal differences in the league, certainly in the bottom half of the league…

Newcastle 1-2 Man Utd
A Manyoo win was totally as expected, but it was not easy! So no change, Newcastle remain level on pts with us but their goal difference suffered a little which worked in our favour slightly – thanks again Manyoo, god I do not like ‘wanting them to win’, but needs must…

Stoke 2-0 Bolton
A Stoke win was not wanted at all but was it really a surprise given their home record? This has been really good and has kept them afloat this season, without this form they would be all but down already. They go 1pt ahead of us but have a worse goal difference, but only just mind!

Another factor to take into account, people ‘might’ argue that Bolton were still in the fight, but I felt they were clear, but that said they are ‘only’ 5pts ahead of us but do have a better goal difference…

Tottenham 4-0 Middlesbrough
Lets be honest here Spurs are not going down, and were not anyway were they? So them beating Boro is better for us in all honesty – winning so well was not in the script though and not what I wanted! Spurs move 3pts ahead of us with a much better goal difference.

Boro remain 2pts behind us with a worse goal difference, that helps – now we just need to go to the Riverside and get something… Easier said than done?

So this is how these results leave the bottom half of the table…

All in all, following our unfortunate defeat on Tuesday, if you had offered me most of these results then I think I would have been pretty disappointed – ideally draws all-round would have been good but you cannot have it all your own way…

We drop one place with Stoke leaping above us – and others – after their win, but so long as 3 teams remain below us it is always in our own hands. It goes without saying that I would rather be looking down with at least 3 teams below us than looking up from a relegation place any day of the week!

Put it this way things are still very much in our own hands and with plenty of games against teams in and around the dogfight we can leave it that way…
