The media often like to put a negative spin on things, but in all honesty Lassana Diarra has not exactly covered himself in glory has he as before he has even kicked a ball for Pompey he has basically said that if a ‘bigger club’ come in for him he will be off: ‘the negotiations went very well.

‘The people at Portsmouth know that I will not spend my life at the club. I was able to add a clause to my contract. If I shine, if a really big club wants me, I already know that everything will go well. I don’t want any more battles’.

It is easy to see why the picture being pained today is one of ‘if a big club comes in for me I will be off like a shot’…

I am all for ambition, and I know that unless we can move significantly forward we will always have trouble ‘keeping hold of’ our better players – but using us as a stepping stone and openly admitting this is a bit much though, I do not like that but I will give the fella a break.

Like I say ambition is a good thing, so I will not be too judgemental on him with what he has said but the fella should at least play for us and then see where things take him before he makes comments like this.

He is a fantastic signing and has played a lot for France recently without being a regular at Chelsea or Arsenal – you cannot be too shabby if you can manage this – and is seen as the next Claude Makelele, so in theory he really should have no problems here and will do a job, but his mouth can get the better of him – so as long as he keeps this in check he will be ok.
