The weekend saw Harry Redknapp “treat” Sol Campbell to a mineral water as he continued his quest to convince the England International to sign for Pompey.
Redknapp has been linked to the 31-year-old since the World Cup and his admiration has been voiced on more than one occasion. But how can he convince Campbell that Fratton Park, ahead of Newcastle, or moves overseas to Italy, France or Turkey really is where his future lies. What can we offer him that others can`t, clearly not the huge wages, but there is more to life than money, isn`t there?
Campbell himself says he has nothing to prove, and moves abroad have always appealed to him, but could his wage demands be ruling out some potential suitors (which would effectively rule out Pompey.)
Why would he want a move to the South Coast? In simple terms, if money isn`t an issue, which again he has claimed himself it isn`t, then if a new challenge is something he is looking for then he will meet no greater one than the one that would await him at Fratton Park. He could be part of a project that is growing in momentum, he could aid the cause, going down in Pompey folk law as well as Arsenal`s, the fans would worship him, and he would almost certainly, when fit, be an automatic first choice. What would we gain from it, besides the obvious, a world-class footballer, best days behind him or not, a player who would surely raise the profile of the club even more. People know Sol Campbell, so people will know Portsmouth Football Club.
If money really isn`t the deciding factor, and no disrespect to Newcastle, but surely a bigger challenge will be offered at Fratton Park, Newcastle may be rebuilding but they are there already, they aren`t aiming to make their breakthrough, which maybe could be to Campbell`s liking, maybe he`s not looking for that much of a challenge?
If Sol really wants to see out his days in the sun then he will no matter what anyone will say to him, but if any one can convince him ‘Arry, and surely old Arsenal team-mate Tony Adams can.
If none of this is convincing enough then the chance to run out in front of THE BEST FANS IN THE WORLD should be enough. Come on Campbell we need plenty of “Sol” on the Coast, and I`m not talking the Coast of France?
