Since signing for Pompey last summer Danny East is one that has really been hampered by injuries, he was sidelined a few times last season – sometimes quite seriously.

A groin injury will mean he misses the pre-season friendly with Charlton tomorrow, as he has several others we have played already this summer…

East, with Andy Awford telling the News today, is also set to miss the start of the season now, which will rule him out of contention to fill a potentially problematic right-back area for us.

When East started out with us last season I cannot say I was convinced by him in midfield or right back, but he did grow into roles with us, mainly right back, and did ok – but seems very much one of those versatile players that you are not quite sure what his best role is…

Is it at right back?

Well, I am not so sure to be honest and this is a main area of worry for me – well, the defence as a whole is still looking pretty rocky!

Adam Webster does ok, and I do think he will develop into a very good footballer, but I think you can see his natural central defensive tendencies often shining through as he is usually drawn into a central role and that leaves too much space for the left sided player attacking him – fortunately his pace usually saw him recover.

Webster or Alex Wynter would be the players I would expect to be our main right backs, at this stage, anyway but cannot comment on Wynter as I have not yet seen him.

All being well East can be back soon enough though as they more options we have available to us the better and if neither Webster or Wynter convince utility man East may well be the one we want to play in that role afterall…
