Kranjcar V England

As England prepare to face Croatia, Kranjcar is preparing to face England. He is likely to start in what will be a huge match for the Pompey star.

‘The chance to play against England is a big one,’ said Kranjcar.

‘But this is the first real test for Steve McClaren and it will not be a surprise to us if we win.

‘We’ve never beaten England. The last time we played a competitive game was in Euro 2004 and we got hammered 4-2.

‘We’re determined to put that right. We respect England, they have some world-class players like Gerrard, Lampard and Rooney, but we don’t fear them.

‘We have the players to shut them out.

‘England have not played anyone of our standard yet and so hopefully we will take them by surprise.’

Harry Redknapp has warned England about Kranjcar claiming that we may have problems handling him.

“‘He’ll be playing against England on Wednesday and I think he’s got the ability to cause us problems. He’s someone we have to worry about. I’ve been very impressed with Niko since he’s been here. He keeps the ball well and does good things.”

“He’s made only a couple of starts for us. But he’s a very, very good footballer – and he’s only 22. He’s a quality player. I really like him. I think he’s class. It’s a huge game for both countries, but the atmosphere won’t get to him. He was Dinamo Zagreb captain as a teenager and has already got 20-odd Croatian caps.”

“He’s a very versatile player, too. He can play wide on the left, behind the front two or in a five-man midfield as the left-sided one of the central three. He’s the kind of player you want to get into your team. It will be hard to keep him out of it.”

Kranjcar joined Pompey in the summer for two and a half million pounds. He made his first premiership start against Tottenham on the left of midfield. He wants to win to tease David James and Sol Campbell.

‘If this match had been last year I would have been playing against Sol Campbell and David James, so it would be nice to return to Portsmouth with a smile on my face having won the game.
