We get to know a little more about eastneydave.

1 – Vital Pompey username?
Eastneydave – Name is Dave and I live in Eastney.

2 – Where do you come from/where do you currently live?
Born in South London moved to Portsmouth when I was seven.

3 – How long have you been a Vital Pompey member?
About eighteen months.

4 – What do you think of Vital Pompey? Be brutally honest!
A good sight getting better all the time especially now more members are getting involved. Good camaraderie among regular members, as though we know each other, yet live all over the globe. Don’t enjoy the Challenge Dave features though!!

5 – How did you find out about Vital Pompey?
Newsnow (I think).

6 – When did you first watch Pompey live – not on box unless this is the only way you have been able to see them? Not necessarily at Fortress Fratton though.
Like Paultsmouth first home game was against Plymouth. Mine was in October 1959 Pompey won 1-0 with a crowd of over 20,000. All I can remember was standing at the back of the Fratton End kicking the doors with everyone else.

I think Paul is a year out with his first game as Plymouth were not in Division 4 with us (1979) but we played them in November 1980 when a returning hero David Kemp scored twice as Argyle won 3-1.

7 – How often do you get to watch Pompey?
Home season ticket holder, away games a rarity these days.

8 – Who is your favourite Pompey Player – current and/or former?
Having seen over 400 different players and well over 1,000 games in my time this is a toughie. I have settled for my boyhood hero Brian Lewis.

Brian was a wing half / midfield player who signed from Palace in 1963. He soon became a favourite with the crowd with his impish skills and an eye for goal. He especially loved winning and converting penalties. We could never understand why a First Division club didn’t come in for him until in 1967 he signed for newly promoted Coventry City. He then moved on to Oxford Utd, Luton and Colchester where he featured in their famous cup win of the mighty Leeds. Eventually he returned to Fratton in 1972. Brian played 194 games for Pompey and scored 32 goals.

My favourite moment was in an evening home game against highflying Huddersfield in April 1966. Lewis had scored a goal and was running midfield in his usual cocky style when with Town defence backing off and offering no challenge he stopped and SAT on the ball. A Huddersfield player (can’t remember who) ran up and kicked Brian and the ball and was promptly sent off. Classic television it would have been but only 13,000 saw it. We won 2-1 by the way.

Sadly Brain passed away in 1998 aged only 55 but left many happy memories.

9 – What is you favourite Pompey moment?
Once again a difficult one but I have settled for July this year when Pompey won the Asia Cup. No I wasn’t there but watching it with wife and friends at the local pub on that Friday afternoon I realised that the club I had supported through all those dark days of near bankruptcy, Division Four and so many near misses had arrived on the world stage. It made all those long cold trips to the north of England to places like Blackpool, Boston and Blackburn make sense it had been all part of a long adventure and we were nearing the destination.

10 – What are your realistic hopes for Pompey in the future?
A trip to Wembley to WIN a major cup final.

Having been brought up with my elders telling me about 1939 and how everything was so different and special then, when I was supporting a poor Pompey side, I want the chance to see if they were telling the truth!!
