One of the few players that Pompey added to the squad during the transfer window was Dave Kitson – who, as we all know, arrived along with Liam Lawrence as part of the deal that took Marc Wilson to Stoke.

He signed a 3-year-contract, and as he told The Pompey Site, after a deal – that has been ‘rumoured’ for some time – finally came about he is looking to get his career back on track following a disappointing spell with Stoke: ‘I just want to play football again. You go to some places where it doesn’t work and have to cut your losses and move on.

‘The deal’s been floating about in the media for a week or two, so I was just standing by the phone.

‘I’m happy to be at such a fantastic club. I’m excited to be here and it’s a fresh start.’

He admits that he wishes he was already ‘settled in’ but as he knows a number of players he does not think it will take him to long to get to know everyone – which it should not as we are short on numbers anyway!

Kitson also said: ‘although in situations like these you always want to be a month down the line when you’re settled in and know everyone’s name.

‘I know a few of the players and Sonko’s a very good friend of mine.

‘But change is good as well and I’m looking forward to meeting up with the rest of the lads for training and bedding in.

Kitson was part of the Reading side beaten 7-4 at Fratton a few years back, he actually scored one of the goals capitalising on a defensive mistake if I recall to score a decent goal.

So, Fratton is familiar to him and he looks forward to getting going and playing for a club with such good support. The 30-year-old also hopes to take us someway back to levels we were previously at if possible: ‘the fans are boisterous just like the Stoke fans, so it’ll be home from home for me.

‘They’re good fans. They’ve had a bit of success in the last few years and if we can get back anywhere near to those levels then we’re obviously going in the right direction.’

If Kitson can get anywhere near to the form he showed with Reading, which got him that £5.5m move to Stoke, then we will not go far wrong.

Fingers crossed…
