Kanu Deal Completed

Pompey have concluded a deal to sign Nwankwo Kanu. The Nigerian, a free agent following his release by West Bromwich Albion after their relegation from the Premiership could (despite being without a club for Pre-Season) to be thrust straight into first team action in the Premiership opener with Blackburn on Saturday due to the stiker shortage at Fratton Park.

30-year-old Kanu, who’s unorthodox, sometimes lazy looking approach, although often highly entertaining can often be more frustrating, making him similar to Lomana LuaLua in that respect, has signed a one-year contract.

I think I’d be lying if I said Kanu would have been everyone’s first choice pick, but needs must, and with the right players around him, a manager who is renowned for bringing the best out of players and a crowd that are second to none I am sure that the Nigerian International will do a good job for us.

We would have liked a striker who would score at least 15 goals a season and although not the most prolific, his time with West Brom, where he never really enjoyed an extended run in the team if we are fair, and his nightmare spell with Inter aside, where it was found he had a serious heart defect, he has averaged a goal nearly every other game.

An extended run in the side and who knows what might happen for Kanu. Hopefully we still have our 15-goal man in Benjani, if not we can still get one before the end of August!
