Before I begin I want to clarify the title, ‘just as well the rest are rubbish!’

The could of course be viewed as disrespectful to our fellow relegation battlers – that is not my intention or what I am saying, I merely use these words to highlight just how lucky we got again at the weekend, a weekend when we ‘could’ and ‘should’ have done ourselves our own favour!

We of course got spanked 3-0 against Arsenal Saturday, the crazy thing is we had chances to have drawn 3-3, at the same time though Arsenal rarely had to put their foot down to get into a higher gear against a very defensively minded Pompey side once again, certainly from the start.

This defeat did not have the problems to us that it could have as everyone else also lost…

Saturday
Man City 3-1 Blackburn
Middlesbrough 0-2 Man Utd
Stoke 0-1 West Ham
Tottenham 1-0 West Brom
Sunday
Liverpool 3-0 Newcastle
Sunderland 0-2 Everton
Monday
Aston Villa 1-0 Hull

So that leaves the table looking like this going into the final 3 games of the season…

When you look at this – I know it is a bit tough to see – it makes it all the more frustrating that we did not have the proper go, and from the off, against an Arsenal side that clearly had their minds elsewhere and were proven in the few chances that we did have that the defence was vulnerable.

It also make me, as I am sure it does others, all the more frustrated at the fact that we failed to ensure that we were home and dry – on our own merit – by winning, or at least looking to win, against the likes of Stoke, Middlesbrough, Hull, West Brom and Newcastle. I hate to harp on about it again but against these sides we had the chance to win but in most we failed to show the intent to do so, and this leaves us with a ‘squeaky bum time’ going into the final games, when we really should not have needed it…

Next weekend sees quite a few relegation battlers come up against each other, which is good and bad – good ‘if’ teams draw, but bad if those that really could threaten us the most won and we lost at Blackburn, something I fear we will! You know me, I am positive about our chances against anyone and I rarely go into a game ‘thinking we will lose’, but as we will almost certainly go there looking for a point, hoping to win it, I think this could see us undone. I hope to be wrong, but I do not think we will see a good game at all, although Blackburn will probably be the side to most be looking for the win! As the home side you would expect this, why do we not do this as the home side…

Doing it ourselves to survive is the way it should be, unfortunately I fear that ‘hoping’ others slip up could well be something that we might have to do, particularly if we show not intent to want to beat Blackburn, Sunderland and/or Wigan, as I am pretty sure that all these sides will be looking to win when they face us!

We cannot keep relying on others, relying on what you do is the way you should go – and in all honesty had we done what we ‘should’ have done we would be safe by now anyway…we have the chance to secure safety this weekend, lets do just that…
