Signings are proving like busses for Pompey at the moment, you wait ages for one then two (or more!) come along at once as we`ve also now signed David James. Another International signing and England International at that is good news for Portsmouth Football Club.

Following up the signing of Sol Campbell ‘arry has added David James to his summer purchases. A fee of around £1.2 million has been paid to Manchester City for the 36-year-old ‘keeper who has signed a two-year contract.

His arrival will add competition to Dean Kiely and probably even see him replace the current number one. Competition is healthy for the club but following Kiely`s recent comments to the News maybe he`ll not be so keen,

‘I don’t think me being replaced would be deserving on the back of my contribution over the past six months.’

How much Dean Kiely would really like to fight for his place as Pompey`s number one I`m not sure? With the pair being the wrong side of 30 both will feel they need to play first team football. Kiely was unwilling to previously act as back-up with Charlton so personally I can`t see him playing second fiddle to James for too long?

James may have to work hard to win over some doubters but he is still a quality addition to the squad. Some footballers are able to be capped, and maybe more than once perhaps down to luck before being found out, but no matter what you may feel about him he must have quality as you don`t win 34 International caps, especially with England without possessing this.
