After more than 20 years of waiting today could be the day when Pompey finally have a player – or more – named in the full England squad?

Not since Mark Hateley in 1984 have Pompey had a player picked for England. He also played, before heading off to Serie A with the mighty AC Milan.

David James and Sol Campbell had seemingly been given ‘lifelines’ by Spineless Steve, but whether or not James did enough to impress him when he came to Fratton on Wednesday only time will tell. Campbell missed the United game with injury so this could see his last chance with England taken from him?

Out of all the English players on view for Pompey under Spineless Steve’s gaze Sean Davis would have probably impressed the most, but he is not in the reckoning although despite a mere 45 minute cameo Matty Taylor will be hoping his assist did the job for him.

David Nugent has already been mentioned by Spineless Steve this week so he will be hopeful that injuries to others give him another chance, but there is talk he may turn to Emile Heskey instead, falling flat on his face when he had a chance to score might not have helped him either.

Whatever happens a little after 2pm this afternoon we should know if the 23 year wait will end, or will James and Campbell be left wondering if their time really has gone now, Taylor when that first time will be and Nugent when it will come again.
