Dan Brett aka PompeySedge shares further thoughts on the likely appointment of Avram Grant.

Reports circulating tonight are that current Director of Football Avram Grant is set to be offered the manager’s job… So is that going to be a good potential choice by the Portsmouth board?

Those stat-fanatics of you will look into the career of the Israeli and discover an impressive 15 wins out of a possible 38 games with Grant as Redknapp’s assistant. He then went on to further improve his personal tally with Chelsea, reaching the Champions League final as well as impressive results, thumping Manchester City 6-0. Only 18 games were played under his stewardship in which the side didn’t take all three points.. Something I think all Pompey fans would love him to replicate!

Of course, statistics don’t always tell the full story, but the fact that he’s been in and around the club before will offer a great standing point for the board when choosing the manager. He’s seen how the club is run internally and has worked with a few of the players who still remain from his days at Fratton Park, but with his impressive CV at club and international level, we’ll do very well to have him near our first team.

He may not be as young as the likes of linked-manager Darren Ferguson or even had as much experience in the English game as Alan Curbishley or Steve Coppell, but his love of the game and knowledge are there for all too see, so even if he stayed with us in DoF capacities, I can see us doing very well under his stewardship.

  • i’ll be happy with Grant cos i think he will only take the job if there is money to spend in January. As most of you know i have said Hart is tactically weak and paralysis strikes all too frequently; so i cant say im sad for him to go. its a bifg losds to the youth team though

  • He is said to be in ‘talks with the board’ over the position of manager. He will want to know exactly how much he will have to spend on players and I expect he would want an experienced #2, soething Harty never had.

  • Thats a very good point eastneydave. Hart never had a right hand man, who knows if Kidd had stayed on then we could be half way up the league by now. I think Grant would be a decent appointment, he has plenty of contacts and as mentioned knows Pompey very well. Time will tell in the next couple of days.

  • Whether or not Grant accepts the job is going to be a good indication of the situation our club is in. If he turns it down, it indicates that there isn’t money to spend in January. We’ll see . .

  • talk about going off half cocked…he is talking about the position…YES….but that does not exactly mean HIM filling the post. He is the DOF is he not? they are bound to talk to him about the managers Job…questions like..”who do you recomend?…if we have cash to spend in jan I expect to see Mancini ..my chelsea/chesterfield supprting mate (Soccer bi-poler) has had a bet on Gus Hiddink!..any way if we are skint, it will probably be curbs/copppell, but my hunch is that there is sadly more to the Fergusson rumour. sadly because…he is always going to in hid Dads shadow.

  • One things for sure, whoever takes the job will need financial support from the Board. Without some new players we’ll be going down.

  • Is Avram the answer? – yes

nice to see that he is holding out and agreeing to join on his terms, rather than hart&adams rushing in like muppetts and getting walked all over.

a top football bloke and more importantley a winner, in israel there where distracters who put his winning down to “luck” ironic hey!

  • i like the idea nodster but as PFCBlue and so many other have stated without funds in January its all “epedemic” as DelBoy would say….
