In with a chance

|

If Brett Pitman continues to find the back of the net – a brace at Oldham was followed by one at Fratton Park against Oxford – in the final weeks of the season Pompey MIGHT yet make the play-offs?

Sunday’s win, a first at home in 2018, made it back-to-back victories – another first this year – and moved us to within two points of Peterborough, who hold the fourth and final play-off spot in sixth.

Pitman’s double, which took him on to 19 for the season, has left the forward very much of the opinion the Blues have now given ourselves a chance of finishing in the top-six.

He told Sky Sports, via the News: ‘We’ve given ourselves a chance the past couple of games.’

However, with an Easter weekend double coming up, when Pompey will face two games in three days, most likely a defining period in the season, Pitman is also playing the old ‘a game at a time’ approach.

‘We’ll just take each game as it comes. We’ve got two games in three days next week so it will be tough.’

I still find it somewhat amazing, in many ways, we’re still there or thereabouts given how poorly we’ve performed in 2018, without a doubt how bad some of the results have been.

But, helped mainly by some pretty decent away form, you find me someone who wouldn’t have hoped our season would soon be alive heading into April and I’ll show you a liar.

Can we really manage to build up some momentum? Well, if we can in the coming weeks then maybe just maybe we could well have more than a chance of heading to Wembley – it’s been a while since visiting what had become our second home – for what had seemed an unlikely play-off final?!
