Nope, I am not talking about Andy Awford!

Although you would think that we will be ‘in safe hands’ once his appointment as the new fulltime manager is confirmed.

The ‘safe hands’ I am talking about is someone who literally uses his hands, Trevor Carson.

When the goalie came to Fratton from Bury last year it was a loan until the turn of the year with a contract expected to be signed in January upon his release from his Bury contract 6-months early.

That did not happen, but he did extend his loan until the end of the season.

Unusually he was given permission by his parent club to feature against them last weekend in the incredible 4-4 draw but as it stands he plays his final game for us this weekend when Plymouth come to a packed Fratton Park.

He has told the News that he wants to stay with us and be part of things when they ‘take off’ next season, which even if he is not at the club he will be advising people to ‘put a fiver’ on us to secure promotion as he is sure we are going places.

With a wedding taking place this summer, and a family to support, he is keen to get his future sorted and with Awford expressing a fondness for him he thinks that he could well get this chance once Awford’s appointment is confirmed.

I think Carson has some areas of his game that are, for lack of another word, weak but others are very strong so I would not be against the idea of signing him on a free this summer at all as the better the defence is in front of him the more confident he seems.

Phil Smith will almost certainly be released you would think leaving us with John Sullivan under contract.

I still think that Sullivan could ‘come good’ so if we are left with him and Carson as goalies next season I think that is a decent pair to have all in all.

Carson, from the looks of it, will win the player of the season award, so I doubt many will be opposed to him earning a permanent contract this summer will they?
