In Defence Of McGee

|

Yes, Luke McGee has made some mistakes of late, which have proved costly at times. However, the goalkeeper has had a decent first season at Fratton Park, in my opinion.

In goalkeeping terms, McGee is very young. Remember, most players in his position come into their prime in their mid-thirties, if not later, so there’s plenty of time ahead for him to fulfil his potential.

Despite having some merits, the decision to bring Stephen Henderson back to Pompey was a slightly odd one. I tend to feel this undermined McGee and possibly had a negative impact on his mindset? Did he need replacing? No, so why make such a move mid-season when the former Spurs youngster was a clear no.1.

Admittedly, the above being said, when looking ahead to the summer bringing in an experienced option wouldn’t do us harm and should benefit both McGee and Alex Bass. So if Henderson can prove his fitness I’d have no issues with him linking up with us for next season. This doesn’t mean McGee should be written off, certainly spoken about as “not being good enough.”

McGee, like any goalkeeper, is punished to the fullest extent when he makes a mistake, but I feel he’s a talented young footballer who has shown some real promise at times this season, suggesting he has a bright future ahead of him. All being well this will be on the south coast.
