Richard Hughes, who is one of the 15 players out of contract in the summer, has spoken in The News today about his determination to stay at Fratton beyond the end of his current deal.

The ‘should be’ Scottish international – surely Scotland do not have that many players better than him to keep him out of the squad – has forced his way back into the 1st team picture under Tony Adams and as always has not disappointed.

‘I love living here, I feel part of the club, I love playing in front of the fans, I love everything about the club.

‘I have never known anyone in the seven years here that I have not enjoyed playing with. Why wouldn’t I want to stay at the club?’

You do not always believe players when they say such things, but when he does I feel totally convinced that he means it – and he is the type of player that I would want us to keep.

Hughes also feels as though he is more part of the squad, and team, than he was under Harry Redknapp: ‘the new manager has been in charge for a couple of months and I have been delighted because I’ve been involved pretty much the whole time.

‘My situation is not what it was a year ago. I feel a far more integral member of the first-team than I have been.

‘At times I have been further away than closer to the team but since Tony came in I’ve really enjoyed the part I have to play.’

With him you know what you will get – he might not be the greatest footballer in the world but he still has more quality about him than he might get credit for and he will give 100% week in week out and always plays for the shirt, if he does not play every week as well he will not kick off and kick up a fuss as he is happy to play as part of a squad.

The vast majority of players that are out of contract when the summer comes round are players that I myself would left go, but Hughes is not one of them – if he wants to stay why should we prevent him? His wages are not going to be astronomical, he will not demand to play every week, but when he does he will never let us down will he. What more could we ask for…
