I have often said to myself this season ‘the French must have some bloody good defenders if Sylvain Distin cannot even get anywhere near their squad’ – but having seen their Euro 2008 defensive line-up, despite the fact they have obvious quality I do not see too much that is much better than him to be honest, and this is a ‘Pompey blinkered’ view aside, honest!

How is it that the donkey in the image above is able to get into the French squad, yet Distin cannot get a sniff?

For those of you that do not know, this donkey, who must surely be the French equivalent of Titus Bramble is none other than Jean-Alain Boumsong, a man who formed the other half of the comedy double act with the said player at Newcastle a few years back…

Ok, Distin has not been in the side all year so the fact that he has not made the squad going to Euro 2008 is not a surprise at all now, but either Boumsong has really got his act together since leaving for Juventus – I think it was Juventus – and now back in France with Lyon or Raymond Domenech does not really pay much attention to the Pompey games when he has Lassana Diarra watched – assuming he does even have him watched?

Distin must have been right up there with the best defenders in the country last season, in a league regarded by many as ‘the best in the world’, so to be that good in such a good league must give him the qualifications needed…

Granted I did not see him week in week out, but from the amount I did see he gave William Gallas, tantrums and all, a run for his money – so although I must confess before he signed I did not realise he was as good as he is, I am amazed that he has never been capped by France – maybe he can gain English citizenship soon eh!

Ah well, their loss will be our gain as he will be kept fresh for next season anyway…

Speaking of the French and Diarra, he has made the final cut going to Euro 2008 this summer, being issued squad no.21 – so at least we can watch him even if we cannot watch Distin, or of course England!

We also have Niko Kranjcar too, given his favoured no.19. He will be pivotal to the Croatian hopes this summer.
