You can read too much into some things, but also not enough into others – although it is more than likely I have read far too much into this.

Upon confirming Jamie Carragher’s decision to retire from international duty, when speaking to the BBC about Wayne Rooney’s injury Spineless Steve said: ‘we’ve still got Peter Crouch and the likes of Darren Bent, Andy Johnson, Jermain Defoe and David Nugent’.

Yep, he says the likes of Nugent – and others – and he might have been at the back of the field but this has raised my hopes that a solid showing from him tonight under the watchful eyes of the Spineless one – if he turns up! – will give him a very good chance of being called up for the Germany friendly.

Carragher’s decision not to reverse his international retirement also gives Sol Campbell an even better chance of being recalled, provided he of course features tonight and again impresses – once again assuming Spineless follows up his intention to come to Fratton tonight?

Although my thinking is no matter what Campbell does if he is recalled, he will be back on the scrap heap as soon as John Terry and the others recover from their injuries. Either way, I will bask in the glory at any England call-ups we might get in the next few days!
