FA chief executive Brian Barwick flew to Lisbon yesterday for talks with Soclari after getting permission of the Portuguese FA.

Redknapp said: ‘I’m disappointed. I wanted one of the English boys to get a chance. Foreign managers seem to have a monopoly here at the moment. I can’t see an English manager managing England in the near future. But I’m sure Scolari’s a good manager.’

Ex-Pompey striker Mick Quinn reckons Scolari is the best candidate for the job.

Quinn said: ‘Brazil were on their knees when Scolari took over. It didn’t even look like they were going to qualify for the World Cup four years. But then they won it.’
