Thiago Motta, the Brazilian midfielder formerly with Barcelona, but now with Atletico Madrid is being strongly linked with Pompey. Guillem Balague – the Spanish fella who does the football on Sky – has shared some opinions on the player on his website.

He says that Motta is currently on trial with Pompey but he is not sure if it is worth us taking a punt on him as he is a player with a shady past: ‘we are talking about a player, after all, who has been injured more often than he has been fit, has – to put it mildly – a relaxed attitude to training, a love of the nightlife and who’s ill discipline has seen him get sent off far too many times at vital moments in key fixtures: even Motta himself has admitted that he has been very unprofessional. It’s perhaps even more frustrating because Motta could have been a very good player.’

He has played for Brazil at international level, so as much as plenty do manage this he cannot be a mug, and holds an Italian passport – so no worries with a work permit – but do we really need a player like him here? Maybe Harry Redknapp could tame him, but if not then we could end up with a fella on very good money who might rock the boat…
